The Weeknd Leads Billboard Music Awards Finalists With 17 Noms

With 17 nominations, The Weeknd leads the finalists for the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.

Doja Cat has 14 nominations, Justin Bieber, Kanye “Ye” West, and Olivia Rodrigo have 13 each, Drake has 11, Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran have nine each, The Kid LAROI has eight, and BTS, GIVON, and Taylor Swift have seven each.

The awards will be presented live on NBC on May 15 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will also be streamed live on Peacock.

The Weeknd will compete for top artist alongside Doja Cat, Drake, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Taylor Swift. Rodrigo is also up for best new artist, which she won at the Grammys on Sunday, with GIVON, Masked Wolf, Pooh Shiesty, and The Kid LAROI.

Furthermore, The Weeknd’s collaboration with Ariana Grande on “Save Your Tears (Remix)” is nominated for six prizes. Meanwhile, the Christian and gospel categories are dominated by the West.

Awards will be given out in 62 categories, including five new categories for this year’s show: top Billboard worldwide 200 artist, top Billboard global excl. U.S. artist, top Billboard global 200 song, top Billboard global excl. U.S. song, and top viral song. Sheeran and his song “Bad Habits” are finalists in all four new global categories for artist, while “Save Your Tears” and The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber’s “STAY” are finalists in both new global song categories. Rodrigo and The Weeknd have been named finalists in both of the new global artist categories.

In other news, country artist Morgan Wallen is nominated for four awards at this year’s BBMAs, just a year after he was barred from attending the 2021 BBMAs after being caught on tape uttering a racial slur. He won three awards last year, although BBMA producers stressed at the time that the finalists are picked based on Billboard chart data rather than by a voting committee or membership group. The Hollywood Reporter has requested comment.

Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album is up for top Billboard 200 album, with Adele’s 30, Doja Cat’s Planet Her, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, and Rodrigo’s SOUR.

The BBMAs for this year are based on the chart period from April 10, 2021 to March 26, 2022. Finalists and winners are determined by Billboard and its data partners, including Luminate, based on important fan engagements with music, such as album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement.

The Billboard Music Awards are produced by MRC Live & Alternative, a branch of MRC, which owns The Hollywood Reporter in a joint venture called P-MRC with Penske Media. The BBMAs are executive produced by Robert Deaton.
