A's trade LHP Sean Manaea to Padres
The San Diego Padres have acquired left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea from the Oakland Athletics, a source confirmed to The Athletic. MLB.com was the first to report the transaction.
Manaea, 30, had a 3.91 ERA in 2021, which was his strongest season in many ways.
He achieved career highs with 179 1/3 innings and 194 strikeouts last season, while leading the American League with two shutouts.
The Padres are acquiring a pitcher who is regarded as a streaky starter, someone who can go on a tear followed by a run of bad outings.
Manaea was voted the American League pitcher of the month in June of last season and again performed effectively in July, but his ERA was 9.90 in August.
He possesses a fastball, a slider, and a changeup in his arsenal.
He is mostly known for his fastball, which averages 92 mph but may reach 94 or 95 mph.
Manaea was selected 34th overall by the Royals in 2013 and was traded to Oakland in 2015 in exchange for Ben Zobrist.
The team's highest-paid players in 2022, as a result of their most recent trade, will be two veterans: Stephen Piscotty ($7.58 million) and Elvis Andrus ($7 million).
