Biden administration to withdraw Title 42 border policy soon
Title 42, the Trump-era public health authority-issued pandemic border policy, is about to expire as the Biden administration formally seeks to phase it down.
Since 2020, Title 42 has been utilized to halt the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Title 42 Border Policy, the government can deter illegal border crossers and asylum seekers at border checkpoints.
The program has reportedly stopped over 1.7 million aliens from crossing the border since the Trump administration announced it in March 2020.
These individuals have frequently been turned away and deported to Mexico.
Joe Biden's government will end the policy on May 23.
With the repeal of Title 42, the government will be able to detain migrants again before deporting or releasing them to seek asylum.
The CDC ordered them to do so because migrants in detention institutions are no longer spreading COVID-19.
However, border officials have expressed worry that the repeal of Title 42 will result in dangerous overcrowding in border facilities in the absence of a stringent turnback policy.
