South Korea's remaining matches have only two objectives after securing a berth in the 2022 World Cup with two games to spare.

The first goal was to break Iran's recent hold over the Taeguk Warriors, and the second was to finish first in the group.

So far, so good on the first goal. Last Thursday in Seoul, approximately 64,000 spectators were permitted back into the stadium to watch Korea defeat its west Asian rival 2-0.

The two teams have played seven times since the 2011 Asian Cup, when the Taeguk Warriors defeated Team Melli 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

The triumph last week puts a stop to Iran's bad run as well as its psychological edge over South Korea.

Son Heung-min and Kim Young-gwon scored the game-winning goals in the 2018 World Cup 2-0 win over Germany.

With 23 points from nine games, Korea now leads Group A, one point ahead of Iran. There is only one game left to play.

All that remains for the team to accomplish to take the lead is to win in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.

The host team in Dubai needs to win to finish third and earn a home playoff versus Australia.

That should make for a good game and the type of test that Korea is looking for as it prepares for the World Cup in Qatar.
